Odd Gender Norms That Still Exist Today
While younger generations are breaking down traditional gender roles, many outdated norms still linger in society—often unnoticed. Ironically, some of the most common ones are also the weirdest.
Big issues like abortion rights and pay gaps get plenty of attention (as they should). But smaller, everyday differences in how men, women, and non-binary people are treated also matter. Here are a few bizarre examples that show how society still separates genders. These norms probably won’t last forever, but it’s worth noticing them now—even if they make you roll your eyes.
1. Missing Changing Tables in Men’s Restrooms
- Women’s restrooms almost always have baby changing stations—either in open areas or inside handicap stalls for extra space.
- But many older men’s restrooms still lack them, forcing dads and non-binary parents to improvise or wait until they find one.
- While the 2016 BABIES Act required changing tables in government buildings, private businesses aren’t obligated to follow suit.
2. The Great Pocket Shortage
- Women’s clothing often has tiny, useless pockets—or none at all. (Hence the excitement when a dress actually has them!)
- This isn’t new: Since the 1700s, fashion has prioritized women’s appearance over practicality, from corsets to skinny jeans.
- Result? Most women rely on bulky handbags instead. Maybe someday those bags can double as patriarchy-smashing tools.
3. Higher Car Insurance for Women
- Women statistically get into fewer accidents but pay up to 7.6% more for car insurance than men.
- No clear reason exists for this gap. Some states banned gender-based pricing, but it’s still legal nationwide.
4. The Sneaky “Pink Tax”
- Products marketed to women (razors, soap, deodorant) often cost more than identical men’s versions.
- Combined with lower wages, this creates a frustrating financial double hit for women.
These are just a few examples of lingering gender inequality. Progress is happening, but there’s still a long way to go.
